Recap: June, 2010

Where’s The Weekend Update?

You may have noticed there was no Weekend Update last week. In addition to making some design & organizational changes on this site, I’ve also decided to change the Weekend Update. Instead we will be doing monthly recaps to go over and review what we’ve done. The “Best Of The Web” series will be continued as its own independent weekly series. The Dirty Dozen photo series will be discontinued in its currentĀ form, and in the meantime we will be looking at some different options for hosting photo galleries.

The reason we’re doing this is because there really doesn’t seem to be a need to do a news update every week. I was beginning to realize that the best part about the weekend update was the Best of the Web and the Photos, and after feeling some dissatisfaction with the CoolIris photo galleries, I decided that we needed to implement some sort of change.

That being said, a monthly post dedicated to looking over what we’ve done the previous month seems to me to be a much better option, and a step in the right direction for Living In Transit.

What We’ve Been Up To

This month has been extremely productive in terms of preparing to leave our settled lives here in New York to go out roaming the earth. We managed to secure our plane tickets, and due to various requests from my relatives to visit them before we leave, we also planned a little train ride from New York to California, stopping at a few cities along the way. I added the Route page to showcase our exact itinerary.

In a quest to give Living In Transit a more simplified and user-friendly feel, I did away with ever-expanding list of categories and the monthly archives from the sidebar. I also took the links down and gave them their own dedicated page, along with the archives. I think the overall look of the site is now much more clean and organized.

We spent most of our mutual free time from work exploring some of the smaller towns near us, in Westchester County, New York. There are still plenty of other places to explore and we still have three months before we leave.

Last week, due to personal reasons, Jen had to make an impromptu trip to Colombia. I’ll admit I’m slightly jealous that she’s getting to see another country while I’m at home working and saving money, but it is something she had to do, and I’m glad she’s doing it. She’s a great photographer and an awesome writer and she’s already been giving us updates on her trip. I can’t wait to see all the photos she’s taken.

Next Month, On Living In Transit…

July in New York means heatwave season, and instead of being cooped up in the house with no air-conditioner, I’m going to make it a point to get out and do even more exploring. I’ll be arranging some more time off from work to allow us to take trips a little farther from home. Expect to see some good things in July.

You will most likely see some more design changes to the site, as I’m in the process of finding a better way to put up photo galleries and such. I have taken Living In Transit about 95% of the way toward my vision of it, but it’s not quite perfect yet. A little more tweaking, and it should be there. Any input from readers on the design, or photo hosting ideas, would be greatly appreciated.

Until next time, have fun and safe travels, keep reading and tweeting, and never stop having adventures!
